Education is a core element of our lean thinking mission, both as a not-for-profit organisation and as a member of the Lean Global Network.  Through our participation in the Lean Global Network and our practical lean work with organisations across the spectrum of private, public and NGO, we constantly test and renew our insights. We then feed those insights back into our workshops.

Our very popular Introduction to Lean workshop is updated with this latest thinking, and as is a new workshop Managing to learn: using the A3 management process.  We are also offering a new workshop tailored for health care managers, Introduction to lean health care.  A very special workshop is that with our Japanese sensei, Mr Furuhashi: Visionary Leaders for Operations Excellence.

Introduction to Lean (ITL)

Understanding comes from doing.  So this introductory course tells you ‘about’ lean but also uses repeated cycles of an experiential learning game to allow understanding to develop.  The workshop is designed for participants from all backgrounds, manufacturing, services, or government, to learn the basic principles, tools and practices of lean management.

The 3-day ITL workshop costs R7900 exc. VAT per participant and is scheduled for:

Cape Town: 26 – 28 August 2013

Johannesburg: 15 – 17 July 2013

Durban: 4 – 6 November 2013

Introduction to lean health care (ITLH)

Building on the extensive experience LIA has developed in the health care sector (going back 10 years), this workshop introduces participants to the lean management approach and how it has been introduced and sustained in health facilities locally and internationally.  The principles of lean, and lean leadership, will be presented and participants will be engaged in several cycles of an ‘emergency department’ simulation game to develop some understanding of how a focus on patient flow can lead to better resource allocation and utilization.

The 3-day ITLH workshop costs R7900 exc. VAT per participant.  People employed in the public sector and by NGOs should request a reduced rate.  The ITLH workshop dates to be advised.

Managing to learn: using the A3 management process (MTL)

Since its publication in 2008, John Shook’s book Managing to learn has vindicated the statement at the time that it was the most important publication ever by the Lean Enterprise Institute.   This course, based on the book, will give participants hands-on experience in reading A3s, reviewing A3s, writing A3s, as well as responding to A3s and thinking about how to use A3s in your organisation.

Additionally, participants are asked to bring a real problem from their own area of responsibility to create their own A3 during the course.  This will provide opportunity for coaching and mentoring, an important dimension of how A3s engage the creativity, development and learning in an organisation.

Individuals should be familiar with lean management and preferably have attended the Introduction to Lean workshop prior to participating in the MTL workshop.

The 2-day MTL workshop costs R5600 exc. VAT per participant.  Each participant will receive a copy of the book Managing to learn by John Shook.  The MTL workshop dates to be advised.

Visionary Leaders for Operations Excellence (VLE)

We have collaborated with Mr Furuhashi of Nagoya, Japan for nearly 20 years.  It has been invaluable. His recent work on the Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing programme in India (a large scale, multi-year Japan-India collaboration) feeds the content of this 5-day workshop.  His three levels of mapping combined with strategic metrics open up the debate and action for priority focus and improvement in any operation, be it at the level of the organisation, a value stream, or a work cell. The workshop will be hosted at a working site; should you wish to host, please contact us.

The 5-day VLE workshop costs R16000 exc. VAT per participant.  Dates have not been finalised but it is likely to run from Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August.
