Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu was appointed by Gauteng Premier David Makhura as a Member ofMEC Qedani Mahlangu the Executive Council responsible for Health in Gauteng in 2014. She has previously also been appointed MEC for Economic Development, Local Government, Infrastructure Development, Health and Social Development. Ms Mahlangu is also the Chairperson of the Social Cluster.

In 1998, Mahlangu became a Member of Parliament, serving as a Gauteng Whip in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). After the 1999 elections she returned to the NCOP as chairperson of the Select Committee on Finance.

Mahlangu was appointed by then-President, Thabo Mbeki to serve as a member of the Audit Commission overseeing the Office of the Auditor General from 2001 to 2004. She was also instrumental in establishing the Joint Budget Committee, whose objective was to strengthen the oversight of Parliament over the executive on budget matters.

She joined the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO) in the late 1980s, which was the springboard for future political activism. As a member of the ANC Youth League from the early 1990s, she served in various capacities within the organization, from branch to provincial and national.

After school Mahlangu qualified as a teacher and studied for an Advanced Diploma in Economics with the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Her interest in the field took her to a post-graduate diploma course with the London School of Economics and an economics programme at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA. She was awarded an Honours Degree in Economics from UWC. She is currently in her final year towards the MSC: Finance (Economic Policy) with the University of London.

Mahlangu has been a member of the Provincial Executive Committee since 2002 and convener of the Economic Transformation Committee in the Province. She was appointed to the ANC Elections Secretariat in 2003 and continues to coordinate sectoral work in that structure.

She was deployed to different provinces to do organizational work until 2004.

Mahlangu is passionate about the promotion of healthy lifestyles, which she promotes by taking part as a runner and cyclists.
