More than a century ago, Sakichi Toyoda confronted a similar challenge when he invented his automatic loom. His solution became the exemplification of the foundational lean principle of jidoka, often described as “automation with a human touch.” Machines could detect problems and stop automatically, but it was people who solved those problems and improved the system. From the very beginning, Lean has treated technology not as a replacement for human intelligence, but as a way to elevate it.

Today, as organisations navigate rapid technological change, the same fundamental question remains: are we designing systems around technology or around people?
